Thoughts

“Charlie - Who he was” Charlie was a caring, funny, very intelligent, goofy, much loved and very lovable person. At 6’1” he gave the best bear hugs and was a loving person that cared about people. He was my first born, an older brother to his two younger sisters who he loved to annoy but was their fiercest protector. The three of them had such a close bond. The playful sibling banter between them would make me laugh so much, they just bounced naturally off each other. He was very easy to talk to. He had a knack of putting people at ease and would have made a wonderful counsellor/therapist himself. He was unofficially one to so many of his friends and family. He could also be awkward and demanding. Sometimes controlling and manipulative to get his own way or what he wanted. He loved reading and had an eidetic memory so held a great range of subjects that he could converse about. He loved films, delving into how they were made, who made them and directed them, who wrote them, how they were made etc. He would watch a vast diverse genre from foreign films to Marvel films to animation etc. etc. He loved gaming. Spending hours online with friends or playing the PlayStation either with his youngest sister or on his own. His passion was art and when he was little wanted to draw for Disney and then had an interest in conceptual artwork for computer games. Then for more serious art in his later years. He taught himself to play guitar and loved to strum out a Bob Dylan song or create one of his own. He could have playful conversations, often liking to play games like guess the film or song from stills or short sound bursts. Another was “would you rather” … then give two obscure scenarios for you to choose from, which would create a playful funny debate, as he challenged the reason for your choices. He would also have some very intense conversations about the latest film he’d watched, something he’d read or on politics and the state of the current climate throughout the world. My son took his life on 26/08/2024 and has left the biggest hole in our lives.

‘YOU’. If every single person who has liked you in your lifetime were to light up on a map, it would create the most glitteringly beautiful network you could imagine. Throw in the strangers you’ve been kind to, the people you’ve made laugh, or inspired along the way and that star-bright web of YOU would be an impressive sight to behold. You’re are so much more than you think you are. You have done so much more than you realise. You’re trailing a bright pathway that you don’t even know about. What a thing, what a thing indeed.

As I closed my eyes to sleep that night I did not know that the truth of that day had eluded me, and I lived that day with a profound unawareness of the irreversible life shattering change that was about to take place. As I closed my eyes to sleep that night I did not know the sun had set on your last day. As I closed my eyes to sleep that night, I did not know that I had spent my last day with you. As I closed my eyes to sleep that night I did not know I would wake in the morning and you would not. As I closed my eyes to sleep that night I did not know you would take your last breath and your beautiful heart would stop beating. As I closed my eyes to sleep I did not know (by Louise Rees)
